What to look out for when buying a baby carrier?
The benefits of baby carriers:
Babywearing has many benefits for babies and parents. On the one hand, the parent-child bond is strengthened and positively influenced by physical contact. Children who are carried cry less, as was shown in a study at the Zurich Children’s Hospital. When being carried, babies are exposed to various physical and environmental stimuli, which train their sense of balance, muscles, eyes, etc. at the same time. And not to forget, wearing it is simply practical in everyday life. Public transport, steps, hikes, where the stroller sometimes has to capitulate, is easy to cope with with a baby carrier. And last but not least: Babies have always been carried, because the pram was only invented in the 19th century and only caught on in the western world. Even today, 2/3 of the children worldwide are carried and not pushed.
What makes a good baby carrier?
A good baby carrier should at least meet the following criteria:
- It should support the baby well so that it does not sit in the carrier but is surrounded and held by the carrier.
- It should be adjustable to the baby and the person carrying it.
- Ideally, it should grow with the baby for some time.
- It should support the baby’s legs in the spread-squat position for healthy hip maturation.
- It should have a headrest so that the baby’s head is well supported when sleeping, carrying on the back, walking quickly, etc.
- It should be able to be used as a front and back carrier.
Fräulein Hübsch baby carriers naturally meet all of these criteria. In 2009, we were one of the first manufacturers to co-found and also fulfill all of these criteria. Carrying schools, carrying consultants and midwives have been recommending us for many years.
What material should a baby carrier be made of?
It is important that your baby carrier is made from non-toxic materials, because it is very close to your baby and the carriers like to put it in their mouths. You should also make sure that your baby carrier is made of natural materials in which your baby does not sweat. For reasons of sustainability, it is desirable if the materials used are robust and durable.
For these reasons, we decided a long time ago to use certified organic cotton (GOTS standard), because cotton is soft and skin-friendly, temperature and moisture-regulating, easy-care, resistant, breathable, absorbent and a renewable raw material. The fabrics we use are woven in Austria and sewn into our carriers in the Czech Republic. This is how we ensure that all EU standards are met.
Which baby carrier suits you best?
Our most popular baby carrier is the SoftTai – simple and customizable. The back part and the straps are made of soft sling fabric made from organic cotton. This makes the SoftTai soft and cuddly right from the start. And very easy to put on.
The SoftTai is the right carrier for you if
- you want it to be extra soft
- you have narrow to normal shoulders
- the baby carrier is often used by people of different heights
- it should be quick and easy
Our classic is the Fräulein Hübsch Mei Tai – it’s been around since 2009 and a lot of babies have been born with it ♡ The back part is made of soft sling fabric made of organic cotton and the slightly wider straps are made of firm organic cotton twill. They give you a little more support.
The Mei Tai is the right carrier for you if
- you have normal to broad shoulders
- firmly padded straps shall take the weight
- the baby carrier is often used by people of different heights
Our WrapCon is the perfect mix of sling and carrying aid. The straps and the back part are made of soft sling fabric made from organic cotton and the straps are as wide as half a sling. This allows you to fan them out over your back and distribute the weight over a large area.
The WrapCon is the right carrier for you if
- you prefer the sling, but would like it to be a little faster and easier
- you have sensitive shoulders and/or back
- you don’t want to do without the sling feeling
- the baby carrier is often used by people of different heights
